Activities & Lifestyle

At Bloom, we support our residents to carry on enjoying the everyday routines we all cherish. Our homes offer a wide variety of lifestyle choices tailored to ability, goals and aspirations not limited by risk and disability.

Our standard is to run a programme of regular events and clubs in addition to meeting the individual lifestyle profile for each person living in our care homes. There are engaging activities planned each day based on the lifestyle preferences and abilities of the residents. Each home has a programme of social events and entertainment both within the home and cultural experiences and opportunities including visits to theatre, exhibitions and local community events/places of interest. We have a dedicated lifestyles team within each home that is able to support residents to continue hobbies and pastimes and explore new experiences. These team members work closely with residents and the wider care team to discuss and plan to meet individual goals and aspirations.

Our philosophy of care is that activity and meaningful occupation is the responsibility of all. From spontaneous moments of fun and interaction, to supporting an individual to do their own laundry, gardening or having a cup of coffee and sharing the cross.

Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. It is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms that reflect progressive damage to the nerve cells within the brain with a number of different causes. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, more people are now being diagnosed with a combination of Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. We know that by building compassionate, trusting relationships, knowing the individuals’ biography, personality and life journey we can help people (and their families and friends who share the journey) to live enjoyable, stimulating and fulfilling lives. Families and friends form an important part of our relationships in these communities; we offer regular forums and education sessions to support and engage wider family and friends. Our care journey will start with us learning more about your life using our “About Me” folio and “How I like to spend my day”. This is just the start. We also build a lifestyle profile to ensure each day meets all aspects of the six senses framework which is uniquely personal to the person we care for.

The memory care program is designed for senior adults with cognitive impairments as a result Alzheimer’s or related dementia. We can accommodate residents with early, middle and late stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Our program has been innovatively developed by dementia experts with decades of personal and professional experience. Alzheimer’s and dementia does not stop a baker from wanting to bake, an artist from wanting to paint or a fisherman from wanting to fish. While some residents may have lost their short term memories, our mission, through our sensory-based programming, personalized services and resident centered care, 24-hour full calendar of activities, exercise programmes, is to stimulate the long term memories that remain intact allowing our residents to continue being who they have always been.

As the prevalence of people with dementia increases we naturally support many families on their journey with dementia. Our aim is to maintain a quality of life for each individual that reflects their personality and life choices, recognising the uniqueness of the person and responding to their individual needs with dignity and respect. Our philosophy of relationship centred care is all the more important in the communities where people live with dementia. Our approach is feelings-based to reflect the reality of the experiences of the people who live with us.

Our care teams receive extensive knowledge and skills development to help them feel confident with their additional communication and observational skills to support people we care for with dementia. We regularly conduct observational audits to continuously improve the quality of the lived experience for people living and working in our communities.

We are members of the Dementia Action Alliance reporting quarterly at a national level on our progress to meet our annual action plan to improve dementia care services, we have signed up to the national Dementia Pledge and are actively involved in a range of research projects with universities in England and Scotland to improve standards of dementia care nationally.
